Road repairs in Kaunas start unusually early this year. With favorable weather conditions, preparatory repair works on two important road arteries, Taikas Avenue and Kęstučios Street, have already begun. In 2020 it is expected to allocate almost a tenth more than last year for the renovation of the city’s infrastructure.
Preparations are underway
“The renovation of streets in Kaunas is no longer a surprise. It is a permanent and necessary city hygiene. This year the largest works will concern the central part of the city and Taikas Avenue. Smaller-scale works will be carried out in all districts of the city,” says Vilius Šiliauskas, director of the Kaunas city administration.
The unusually warm winter allowed road workers to begin preparatory work on capital repairs to Taikas Avenue earlier this week. The Kauno Vandenys company undertook the renovation of the rainwater, sewerage and water supply networks. The repair of the rain net and water collection wells is intended to be completed by spring, and it is planned to install water collection wells in the necessary places.

“We intend to start repair work on Taikas Street in March, as soon as weather conditions allow, and finish it in autumn. We want to immediately apologize to the drivers for the inevitable inconveniences. This year we will have to be patient, so that in the future we will have one of the main entrances to the city that is convenient and high-quality,” said Aloyzas Pakalniškis, head of the urban management department of Kaunas Municipality.
In the section from Ateitis pl. at Pramoni ave. the roadway will be radically renewed, bus entrances will be installed at public transport stops. A new pedestrian and bicycle path has been designed on one side of Taikos Ave., as well as small rest areas with benches and bicycle racks.
After six months, work should begin on the section of Viale Taikas from Viale Savanorių to Via Studentu. The entire Taikos Avenue project is expected to be built within two years, so the remaining part from Pramonė Ave. to Studentu st. it is expected to be renewed next year.
It will manage the central streets
After the reconstruction of Laisvė aleja is completed this spring, the adjacent streets will not be forgotten. Great attention will be paid to the renovation of the accesses to Laisvės Avenue – the reconstruction of Kęstutis, L. Saplica and S. Daukantas streets. The renovation of the Musical Theater and Municipal Garden Park environment is expected to start this year.
“The action has already started on Kęstučis Street. As on Taikas Street, first underground water communications will be renewed, catenary supports will be replaced and lighting will be installed. After completing these works, repair work on the street itself will begin from May. Not only the roadway, but also the sidewalk will be renewed,” assured A. Pakalniškis.
This year, the reconstruction of Vilniaus Street, called the heart of Kaunas, is expected to begin.
“We want to start in the autumn, when the season of outdoor cafes ends. In parallel, the technical project of the Town Hall square will be prepared. Another goal this year is to complete the reconstruction of Santaka Park. By organizing these spaces, the historic center of Kaunas would become even more attractive for both residents of Kaunas and guests of the city,” said Deputy Mayor of Kaunas Andrius Palionis.
For pedestrians and cyclists
Smaller city streets are also undergoing renovations. Road surfaces in Mosėdis, Tyruliai, Gurguuliai, Dūkštas, Naujadvaris, Kanalos, Pagirėnai, and Griškabūdis, as well as roads in Bruknii and Aktinidii, are being renovated.
Meanwhile, A. Baranauska Street, Pramonės Street, Ukmergės, S. Žukauska Street, Basanavičiaus Street, and Raudondvarios Square are being renovated. Pedestrian walkways on Linkuvos Street and North Avenue are also being renovated.
In the micro-districts of Šilainiai and Eiguliai, integrated pedestrian walkways are being renovated. In Šilainiai, construction is planned on Vėtrungė Street, Sukilėlių Avenue in Eiguliai, and Ukmergė and P. Plechavičius Streets.
Meanwhile, renovations are underway on A. Baranauska Street, Pramonės Street, Ukmergės Street, Sukilėlių Avenue, and P. Plechavičius Street. The “Like Bike” cycling revolution, which began a few years ago, will cover several locations this year: the bike path on Panerių Street will be completed, and a new nearly 2-kilometer-long bike path will extend from Tvirtovės aleja and Jonava Street.
