The little passers-by were looking for the messengers of spring

However, their company was most needed not by students, but by passing drivers. When they saw a large group of spring prophet seekers moving along the sidewalk, led by “Amsius”, an aide to the police officers, they confusedly slowed down their cars, not knowing what to do: stop or drive. Some even had their engines shut down out of nowhere. For these drivers, the encouragement of police officers to continue their journey was a real solution, solving a conundrum that suddenly appeared on the road. But elementary school children didn’t have these puzzles. Practical rules of behavior on the road before the trip were once again discussed in the lesson on safe traffic “Be a participant in safe traffic”.
How to cross the street and how to choose the right place if there are no traffic lights and pedestrian crossings nearby? How to behave in non-traditional situations? It was not difficult for Pasval elementary school children to answer this question, who immediately solved such tasks correctly.
The little passers-by know how to safely cross the country road
which winds through woods and curves. They are also well oriented in non-standard traffic conditions, where it is necessary to teach children how to behave, teaching them to drive safely,” says Aistė Dijokaitė, Commissioner of the Vilnius County Traffic Police.
The concept of safe behavior in non-traditional situations is not the only strong point. For the small citizens of Pasvalis, even the most complex tasks of road safety are overcome, which accompany students since childhood. Pasvalys can rightfully be called the capital of the “Shviesofor” competition. The recent road safety event has deep traditions.
Students can’t wait to jump on and hop on their bikes. So, the kids explained once again what a tidy bicycle should look like, what colors are required for the reflectors on the front and rear and what the responsibilities of a young cyclist are. The little passers-by promised to only go around with a tidy bicycle, with reflectors and lights, always with a helmet and wearing a jacket. For them it is much more than a game, a means of entertainment. Thus trained, the little ones will become tidy drivers who take care of their equipment and for whom safe behavior is a matter of course.
Unlike the conversation about bicycles, questions about school bus order made Pasvalis’ children hesitate. When asked whether they always wear seat belts while driving, not all elementary school students gave a unanimously positive response. Some little ones shook their heads and flailed their paws, relieved that they hadn’t been wearing seatbelts. Maybe due to faulty seat belt fasteners?
“From now on, vigilant children will immediately pay attention to such defects in the school bus or parents’ car. That is why it is very important to develop children’s attention and indifference towards the factors that determine road safety,” says Valdas Juozas Vilūnas, host of the LRT television show “Roads, Cars, People”.
In search of the badger, the prophet of spring, the little people of Pasval visited the technical control center of Pasval. The campaign organized in it continues the series of road safety events for primary school children, “Be a participant in safe traffic”, initiated by the Lithuanian Association of Technical Inspection Companies “Transeksta” together with the Vilnius County Traffic Police.
Representatives of the Pasvalis technical control station told and showed elementary school children how, for what purposes and with what devices the car’s brakes, lights, exhaust gases and other parameters of the technical state of the vehicle are checked.
In the safe traffic campaign the young people of Pasvala saw, heard and learned a lot. The only thing they couldn’t see was a badger. The latter, waking up that day and emerging under a very bright sun, was afraid of his own shadow and ran to go back to sleep, falling on the same side, in front of the first arrivals who had come to visit him. Such behavior of the badger, according to naturalists, predicts a long winter and the upcoming spring. However, the knowledge and skills acquired during the road safety event will help primary school children to receive it with joy.
