Mazda CX-5 has learned to recognize pedestrians at night

More colors, bigger screen

The bold and refined exterior design of the CX-5 remains almost unchanged: observant enthusiasts will notice nice details such as the updated design of badges and inscriptions. The CX-5 can be ordered in 10 different colors, including the new metallic gray “Polymetal” introduced only for the updated model.

As with all latest generation Mazda vehicles, the interior architecture has been designed to maximize driver comfort and intuitiveness, with the main controls ergonomically arranged around the central point of concentration: the steering wheel.

An 8-inch Mazda Connect screen is mounted on top of the updated Mazda CX-5 center console. The improved display can be used to display a number of functions, such as a 360-degree view around the car or the operation of cylinder deactivation technology, which improves fuel economy.

A pleasant atmosphere in the cabin of the CX-5 is created by high-quality LED lighting of the ceiling, central storage compartment and luggage compartments.

Petrol and diesel engines

The CX-5 can be chosen with one of several Skyactiv petrol and diesel engines, with Skyactiv-MT manual or Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission and with the latesgeneration of the i-Activ intelligent all-wheel drive system.

These options include a 2-litre 121 kW/165 hp Skyactiv-G petrol engine with manual or automatic transmission and two- or four-wheel drive.

Cars with manual transmission have a cylinder deactivation function. This technology shuts down two of the engine’s four cylinders in light load situations, such as driving at a constant speed. Airflow, fuel injection and ignition timing are precisely controlled to seamlessly switch the engine from two- to four-cylinder operation, reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions2 disposition

The full engine range for the updated CX-5 includes: 143 kW/194 hp 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine with automatic transmission and choice of front- or all-wheel drive; 110 kW/150 hp 2.2 liter Skyactiv-D diesel engine with manual or automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive; 135 kW/184 hp 2.2 liter Skyactiv-D diesel engine with all-wheel drive and manual or automatic transmission.

Automatic transmissions on all models can now be operated with paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. This reinforces the Jinba-Ittai philosophy, which has prevailed since the first generation of the legendary Mazda MX-5 convertible, according to which the driver merges with the car: he is like a rider on a horse, maximally involved in its control. This philosophy guides the development of all Mazda vehicles.

The off-road technical data of the CX-5 has been improved together with the Off-road Traction Assist system installed on all-wheel drive models. It is designed to help drivers when road conditions become unfavorable or wheels start to slip. The Off-road Traction Assist system integrates AWD and Traction Control (TCS) and brakes wheels that spin freely without traction, thus distributing the correct portion of torque to the wheels that have traction on the road, thus extracting maximum capacity.

Reduced road noise

The driving dynamics of the new model have been improved, focusing on a higher quality cabin atmosphere. Mazda engineers focused on reducing road noise when the car transitions from a rough road surface to a smooth surface.

For this purpose, several innovative solutions were adopted: the insulating materials of the roof were changed, a new rubber connection between the airbag and the steering wheel, etc. By reducing not only sound, but also low-frequency vibrations transmitted by the road surface, an even higher quality driving sensation has been achieved.

These details further enhance the minimalism and tranquility typical of Mazda cars, ensuring that passengers feel comfortable in the cabin and are not distracted by any distractions.

Autonomous braking with pedestrian detection

The updated CX-5 Advanced Smart City Brake Support (Advanced SCBS) system detects pedestrians for the first time even at night.

Advanced SCBS uses a forward-looking camera that detects vehicles and pedestrians and helps avoid a collision or mitigate damage in the event of a traffic accident. The system detects cars and pedestrians at speeds of up to 80 km/h.

For added safety when driving in the dark before sunset, the new automatic headlight settings allow the headlights to turn on approximately 30 minutes before sunset at approximately 2,000 lux. Thanks to the previously activated lights, it is easier for other drivers and pedestrians to notice the car.
